Can I use Happy Pay at major South African retailers like Game, Takealot, Makro, Checkers, Pick n Pay or Woolworths? The short answer is: Happy Pay isn't offered at every big-name retailer yet — but it is available at a growing list of stores including Perfect Dealz, Ackermans, Incredible Connection, and several others. Most of South Africa's biggest supermarket and wholesale chains don't currently support Happy Pay at checkout.

In this guide we go through the most-searched "can I use Happy Pay at X" questions one by one, so you can see at a glance which major retailers accept Happy Pay and which don't. If a retailer doesn't offer Happy Pay, we'll tell you what BNPL alternative it does support — and where you can shop with Happy Pay today, including across the full Perfect Dealz product range.

"Happy Pay's network is growing fast, but many of South Africa's biggest retailers haven't integrated it yet. Always check the payment options at checkout before assuming — and know which alternatives are available."

2. Can I Use Happy Pay at Game?

✗ Not currently

Game (part of Massmart)

Game does not currently list Happy Pay as a payment option at checkout. Game is owned by Massmart (alongside Makro) and typically offers RCS store cards, PayJustNow, and traditional card/EFT payment methods.

If you want to split your Game purchase into instalments, PayJustNow is the most widely accepted BNPL option at Game. Alternatively, you can apply for an RCS store card. Neither of these is identical to Happy Pay — PayJustNow splits into 3 instalments rather than 2, and RCS operates as a revolving credit account rather than a flat-fee BNPL.

3. Can I Use Happy Pay at Takealot?

✗ Not currently

Takealot

Takealot doesn't currently offer Happy Pay at checkout. Takealot has partnered with PayJustNow (including both Pay in 3 and Pay in 12 options), along with traditional card payments, EFT and vouchers.

Takealot introduced PayJustNow in late 2025 as its first major BNPL partnership. It's possible more BNPL options (including Happy Pay) will be added in future, but there's no confirmed integration as of 2026. If Happy Pay becomes available at Takealot we'll update this guide.

4. Can I Use Happy Pay at Makro?

✗ Not currently

Makro

Makro's published payment methods include Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners, Union Pay debit and credit cards, Makro Gift Cards, EFT, RCS Makro Store Card, PayJustNow and PayJoy (for cellular). Happy Pay is not currently listed.

For Makro purchases, PayJustNow is the listed BNPL option at checkout. Makro also offers Makro Finance for larger purchases (up to 60 months to pay) and the Makro Store Card through RCS.

5. Can I Use Happy Pay at Checkers, Shoprite and Pick n Pay?

✗ Not currently

Checkers, Shoprite & Pick n Pay

South Africa's major supermarket groups have been slower to adopt BNPL than fashion and electronics retailers. Happy Pay isn't currently integrated at Checkers, Shoprite or Pick n Pay — most groceries are not typically BNPL-eligible across any provider.

PayJustNow has partnerships with some Shoprite Group stores (Sixty60, Checkers, selected others) for non-grocery purchases, but Happy Pay is not available at these chains today. Pick n Pay remains outside the BNPL ecosystem for now.

💡 Tip: Groceries are rarely BNPL-eligible anywhere in South Africa because BNPL providers typically focus on higher-value, considered purchases rather than everyday food shopping. If you see BNPL at a supermarket, it's usually for electronics, appliances, or homeware — not groceries.

6. Can I Use Happy Pay at Woolworths?

✗ Not currently

Woolworths

Woolworths does not currently offer Happy Pay. Woolworths has partnered with Payflex (4 interest-free instalments), its own WRewards store card, and traditional card/EFT payments.

Payflex is Woolworths' BNPL option of choice — it's structurally similar to Happy Pay (interest-free instalments), but splits into 4 payments rather than 2 or 3. If you specifically want Happy Pay, you'll need to shop at a different retailer.

7. Can I Use Happy Pay at Mr Price, Superbalist and Truworths?

✗ Not currently

Mr Price, Superbalist & Truworths

Among major SA fashion retailers, Mr Price accepts cards, EFT and lay-by but no BNPL currently. Superbalist supports PayJustNow and Payflex. Truworths uses its own account-based store card rather than third-party BNPL.

Fashion is a strong category for Happy Pay overall (Ackermans, Sealand Gear, MAXHOSA all accept it) but the biggest SA fashion retailers haven't integrated yet. Ackermans is the main exception.

9. How to Check if a New Retailer Accepts Happy Pay

The Happy Pay merchant network is growing month-on-month, so this guide won't stay accurate forever. Before assuming a retailer does or doesn't accept Happy Pay:

Check the retailer's checkout directly

Add a small item to your cart and go to the payment page. If Happy Pay is supported, it will appear alongside other payment methods (cards, EFT, other BNPL options). If it's not there, it's not currently integrated.

Check Happy Pay's official directory

Happy Pay maintains an updated merchant listing on their official website at happypay.co.za. This is the single source of truth for the current network.

Search "[retailer name] Happy Pay"

Most retailers that integrate Happy Pay publish a dedicated landing page explaining how it works at their store. A Google search will surface these pages within minutes of a new integration going live.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't all major retailers accept Happy Pay? +
Happy Pay is a relatively new BNPL provider and its merchant network is still growing. Many large retailers have established BNPL partnerships with PayJustNow, Payflex or MoreTyme and haven't yet added Happy Pay as a second option. Expect the list to expand throughout 2026.
Can I use Happy Pay for groceries? +
Happy Pay is not currently available at any major South African grocery retailer (Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Woolworths Food). BNPL providers generally focus on higher-value, non-essential purchases rather than everyday food shopping.
Which BNPL option has the widest store coverage in South Africa? +
PayJustNow currently has the broadest merchant network in South Africa, with partnerships at Takealot, Makro, Superbalist and hundreds of other stores. Happy Pay's network is smaller but growing rapidly, particularly among SA-made brands and specialty retailers. See our PayJustNow stores guide for the full list.
If Happy Pay isn't available at a store, can I still use a similar service? +
Most major retailers accept at least one BNPL option. Common alternatives to Happy Pay include PayJustNow (3 monthly instalments), Payflex (4 fortnightly instalments) and MoreTyme (3 monthly instalments). The exact options depend on the retailer.
Is Perfect Dealz one of the Happy Pay retailers? +
Yes — Happy Pay is live at Perfect Dealz checkout across our full product range. Simply select Happy Pay as your payment method to split your order into 2 interest-free instalments aligned with your pay cycle.
Does Happy Pay add new retailers regularly? +
Yes — Happy Pay announces new merchant partnerships regularly through their LinkedIn and website. The company raised a $5M seed round in early 2026 to scale merchant acquisition, so expect new retailers to be added throughout the year.
Can I use Happy Pay at any in-store till in South Africa? +
Happy Pay is primarily an online checkout payment method. Some partner retailers may offer it in-store via QR code scan, but for most shoppers the experience is digital. Always confirm at the till or on the store's Happy Pay page.
What's the difference between Happy Pay, Payflex and PayJustNow? +
Happy Pay splits into 2 instalments on your paydays (with a soft credit check). PayJustNow splits into 3 equal monthly instalments (no credit check). Payflex splits into 4 fortnightly instalments. Each has a different store network and payment structure. Read our full Happy Pay vs PayJustNow vs Payflex comparison.
